If you own a gym chances are you want it to be a successful one.
You want your clients to come back, to tell their friends and everyone they know just how great you are, and ultimately continue to grow your membership base.
With the amount of gyms out there today you want to make sure yours stands above the crowd.
To achieve this you’ll need to have a set of qualities that meet and exceed the expectations of your customers.
Cleanliness
First thing’s first, if your gym isn’t clean people aren’t going to come back. Ever. You can be sure they are going to tell everyone they know not to stop by as well.
Having a dirty facility can lead to many issues for a gym owner such as failing health inspections, bad customer reviews, and shorter life spans of equipment.
All of which, will cost you in the long run.
You should always have a thorough routine that includes wiping down machines, cleaning and providing fresh towels, cleaning locker rooms, and keeping bathrooms fully cleaned and stocked.
You can even provide convenience items such as sanitation or complimentary water bottle stations.
It’s important to take care that your customers feel comfortable while they are using your fitness facility.
Functioning Equipment
There’s nothing quite like the feeling of frustration when you go to hop on the treadmill at a gym and they are all full.
This feeling can be made even worse when you catch sight of one lone machine in the corner only to find that it’s out of order.
Machines break, that’s understandable. However, it’s highly important that when this happens you make sure to do everything in your power to get it fixed as quickly as possible.
While it may not seem like a big deal if a machine breaks every now and then, you never know if a customer has to deal with this issue every single time they come to your gym.

Fitness Classes & Activities
Providing access to fitness classes outside of the regular workout sessions to your customers can be a huge positive.
It gives a sense of value to customers when they are able to do more than just use the machines and weights provided by your gym.
The list of classes that your gym can offer is an extensive one.
It can include anything from spin class, yoga, Crossfit, PiYo, Zumba, and many more. If your fitness center has a pool you could even offer water aerobics or simple swimming courses.
Also, by offering classes in the morning and evening you can cater to even more of your customers schedules.
Any extra value you can provide will benefit you and boost your gym’s rating by helping customers stick around and spread the word.
Great Staff
A great staff can be hard to come by, so when you have someone good make sure you take care of them.
There is nothing quite like being new to a gym and trying to get through a workout with no one there to answer the questions you may have.
Or, the person in charge of answering questions would rather be doing anything but helping those in need.
Also, this goes for your trainers or teachers of classes and activities. Make sure they are fully capable of teaching the class and answering any questions the customers may have about it.
If an individual is paying you for personal training, make sure the trainer can deliver or you’ll have quite a few angry customers.
Inviting Atmosphere
After addressing the four qualities above, your gym will become a happy and energetic place where people can come and forget about the day’s troubles and just get on with their workout.
In the end that’s what people who go to the gym truly enjoy. They don’t want to start a workout changing in dirty locker rooms, hopping on dirty machines, or touching dirty weights.
They don’t want to deal with broken machines that may leave a large gap in their workout that day, and they definitely don’t want to deal with rude or unhelpful staff.
The great thing as a gym owner is that you have the power to give your customers the best experience possible.
You have the power to change someone’s outlook on their entire day by providing a clean and inviting place for them to forget life’s troubles, even if it is only for and hour or so.
These qualities will help you keep the clients you have, build your membership, and run not only a successful gym business, but a great one.
