There are many types of gym flooring for all different types of gyms. Make sure to read and compare all flooring types before purchasing so you pick the best one thats right for you.

The most common materials for floor tiles are Rubber, Foam, and Turf. Different flooring is used for different types of workouts so read below to see the flooring that would work best for you!

Rubber Flooring

Probably the most popular gym flooring, rubber is easy to install, durable, and inexpensive. Rubber is mostly used in common area where heavy weights or exercise machines are placed. However it is not ideal for cardio or other physical activities that require a floor with more bounce. Plyometric rubber is the exception as it is slightly more forgiving.

Rubber is a heavier material than foam so it is slightly more difficult to install but provides a more durable and cleaner surface. It needs no adhesive as its weight keeps it in place. For areas with more movement, dowels can be used to assist the tiles staying in place.

Foam Floor Tiles

Foam Floor Tiles are generally less expensive because they are a lighter material. They also come in more varieties or thickness and densities. These foam tiles are more suitable for home gyms where cardio and floor exercises are done. It is not as durable as rubber and is damaged easier under extreme weights. It is easier to install due to its light weight and makes for a simple solution to a multi purposed area.

Gym Turf – Coming Soon

Turf is used primarily to resemble and react more like real grass, allowing alternative exercises to be done indoors with little difference to outside. Turf is typically made from nylon or poly or a mixture of the two, providing a life like resemblance to grass. It is suitable for designated areas but not meant for multipurpose uses.

When starting up a new gym you’re going to incur many costs. One of the largest will be the equipment you’ll need to fill the gym. It’s important you don’t run out and immediately spend tons of money on equipment.

Take your time and decide exactly how much you need, whether you want to go new or used, and what your budget might be.

By doing this you can almost always guarantee a successful opening.

Good Fit

The first thing you want to do when looking at new equipment is to measure your gym. It won’t do you any good to buy a bunch of equipment you don’t have the room for. Make sure the equipment can be spaced properly. You don’t want your members touching each other while they are working out. This will gross out most. Not to mention the accidents or injuries that can occur.

It’s also a good idea to come up with a layout of your gym before you buy equipment. Try taking a walk and drawing up a rough sketch of where your different areas will be. How many machines do you want in each area? How many machines will each area hold?

Deciding on a layout before you buy the equipment can help avoid the machines being too close and can make setup a breeze. The flow of your gym will benefit when everything has its place.

Price

The price of the equipment is also important. The last thing you as a new gym owner want to do is go overboard on the equipment and not have money left over for rent and utilities. Not to mention the other costs of starting a business.

Create a budget for your equipment. This will help you know what you can and can’t spend when it comes to outfitting your gym. If your budget isn’t that large try going used over new. The quality will be similar but the price difference can be significant.

This can help you get the machines you want without having to pay high dollar for brand new equipment.

Make sure at the end of it you aren’t spending more than you need to on equipment. Keeping it reasonable will allow room for everything else to fall into place.

Right Amount

Making sure you have enough equipment is also important when outfitting your gym. Do you have enough equipment to keep multiple members happy at once? Try starting small and adjusting as you get more members in your gym. Making sure there are plenty of machines to be used is a great way to keep people coming back.

Not sure how you want to set it all up? Trying visiting a gym similar in size to yours to get ideas. While you’re at this gym try paying attention to the members around you. What are the pieces of equipment you see used the most? What areas seem the most crowded?

You’ll want to order the right amount of machines to keep your customers happy. You never want to have an issue where all of your machines are full. This can lead to unhappy customers.

Condition

On the topic of new and used, you will need to decide which will suit your gyms needs better. There are lots of great brands of equipment out there some more expensive than others. If you have high hopes of finding the latest and greatest equipment for your gym you might end up spending more than you planned.

However, if you like certain brands and don’t mind investing in slightly used versions you can get great deals on used equipment. This will allow you to outfit your gym with equipment you can be proud of at only a percentage of the cost of buying new.

Not only is this great for when you first start your gym, but it’s also useful if you’re looking to upgrade. Keeping up with machine trends and member requests doesn’t have to be so taxing. You can find great deals on used equipment to keep your members happy.

Finding a proper used gym equipment dealer is vital in finding equipment that lasts. While all will promise great equipment it takes a good dealer to deliver on that promise.

Here at Equip Your Gym we understand the value in providing excellent used gym equipment and that’s what you’ll find.

Opening a new gym, or any business, is hard work. You have to make sure you have as much as possible in place to ensure a smooth operation. If you fail to pay attention to the details and only focus on the bigger picture you could be dealing with a nightmare.

Here are 5 things you should have in place before you even think about opening the doors to your gym.

Funds

Some say ‘money is the root of all evil’. While this may be true money also helps you buy things. Everything. If you don’t have the funds to open your new gym set aside you’re already in bad shape as a new business owner. You need funds to do everything with your new gym. You need it to open a location, buy equipment, hire staff, advertise, and of course pay yourself.

You need to figure out where your startup funds are coming from. Do you have money put away in a savings account? Will you be taking out a small business loan? Do you have a few investors lined up and ready to start a new company? Wherever your funds are coming from make sure they show up.

Business Partner

Deciding whether you should have a business partner isn’t something you should dwell on. Chances are if you don’t already have someone in mind, you’re better off on your own.

The benefits to having a business partner are more funds at the start, another person to bounce ideas off of, and an added perspective. However, with the benefits come the negatives. This includes the added risk of argument, breaking of trust, and getting burned.

Make sure if you decide to have a business partner you sign a contract or agreement. Each party involved should know exactly what is expected of them and what they can and can’t do.

Business Plan

Having a business plan for any business you run is highly important. Your business plan should lie out exactly what you plan to do with your company. What will your financial goals be? What do you plan to make per month? What are all of the expenses you’ll incur? This includes taxes, insurance, zoning, repairs, maintenance fees, and more.

As the owner you’ll need to decide how much you want to make per year, how much staff you want to employ, and how big your gym is going to be. You should also decide whether you want to seek legal council or keep a CPA on deck for any financial advice. Figure out a plan to keep track of your spending.

Branding

Another thing to have in mind is what you want your gym to look like. What is its name going to be? How do you want your logo to look? Is there a certain color scheme you have in mind? Deciding on all of these before you open is a must. If you don’t know your gym’s brand how do you expect anyone else to remember it?

Along with your branding you’ll need to decide on advertising. How, where, and to who will you advertise? Do you plan on placing ads on Facebook or at your local supplement or smoothie chain?

You have to be able to tell people what makes your gym better than any other gym they might decide to go to. If you can’t do that then it isn’t time to open your doors.

Set Location

Lastly, you’ll need to decide on a location. You’ll need to figure out whether you want to build, buy, or rent a gym space. No matter what you do it’s important you stick to your budget. Remember, starting your gym doesn’t stop with renting the space. You still have to buy equipment, hire staff, and keep the utilities on. Don’t blow your entire budget on a space you can’t afford or else you’ll set yourself up for failure.

Where you build, buy, or rent your gym is imperative to the business you will do. You don’t want to put your gym two blocks away from a big named gym, or you’ll get crushed. You also don’t want to put your gym too far from neighborhoods, or else no one will show up.

Obviously these aren’t the only things you need when starting up a new gym but they are important. If you ignore any of these you may be spelling disaster for your new business before it even opens its doors.

Are you looking to open a new gym or currently running one? Do you find yourself hoping you’ll be successful but not quite sure how to achieve that success? Don’t worry you’re not alone.

There are plenty of people out there struggling to make this dream of theirs a reality.

Whether it’s a lifelong dream of yours or something you just recently decided to take on, owning a gym is tough work. It takes time, money, and energy but the end result can be worth it.

Your ultimate goal in owning a gym should be to be successful. To be successful there are a few things to make sure you do and don’t do.

Don’t Do It For The Money

When you first opened your gym you did it with the goal of helping people achieve better health and happiness. The thought of people being unhappy with their appearances and wanting to live healthier lives pushed you to strive for success in the gym industry.

Lately though, you find yourself questioning why you got involved in the first place. Or, maybe the money just isn’t what it used to be. If you start to get these thoughts you should ask yourself if owning a gym is really what you wanted to do. If your answer is yes then it’s time to make a change.

You have to get back to why you started your gym in the first place. Life is too short not to do what you love. The second you start doing anything with the sole purpose of making money you lose your purpose and your customers will notice. The end result will be a mess and you’ll be unhappy.

Do Show Your Clients You Care

Showing your clients you care is important to being a successful gym owner. Anybody can run a gym and treat their members like a number. It takes someone who truly cares about their members to show them that they care.

There are many ways you can show your gym members that you care. This can include being on time for training with members and meetings with staff, taking care of your equipment and keeping a clean gym, acknowledging long-standing members and offering rewards, and coming to work everyday with a purpose.

Your purpose can’t just be to make money, though, it has to be the goal you set out with when originally opened the doors to your gym, to better the life of others and help them achieve their fitness goals.

Don’t Be Afraid To Delegate

As an owner of a business you might find you are curious how things are going in the different departments. Naturally, you’ll assign tasks to your employees. Once these tasks are assigned it’s important that you let them do the job. If you constantly worry whether tasks you assigned are getting done you’ll be a mess.

Second-guessing your employees can cause them to lose faith in themselves and the work they do. In order to have a strong staff you need to build them up with confidence and they will do a better job.

Step back and wait until the project is finished then review the work. If you feel like it needs to be redone have the person address any issues you find. If you feel like you can do a better job then, and only then, take up the reigns. If you spread yourself too thin as a business owner you’ll eventually break.

Do Manage Your Time & Your Money

It’s also important as a gym owner that you try setting a strict schedule so you’re able to achieve what needs to be done for the day. This allows you to focus without getting sidetracked by other issues that may pop up.

Also, make sure you prioritize your events for the day by most important to least. This ensures the important stuff gets done first and not pushed aside.

Having a good idea where your finances are is a good business strategy no matter what industry you’re in. By keeping an eye on your finances and monitoring them closely you’re more likely to avoid any surprise issues. You’ll know exactly what you’ve got going on in the bank at all times.

This helps when it comes time to invest in a new product or service, hire new staff, upgrade your gym equipment, and any other tasks that come with owning a business.

By paying attention to the little details of gym ownership you’ll be able create a better larger picture.  This will ultimately help you achieve success in your business and maintain it.

Do you currently own and operate a gym? Are you curious how you can get more members in the door? Everyone says they’ve got the secret to getting more customers. The truth is, it doesn’t have to be as hard as people make it out to be.

While there’s no set task that works the best there are a few different things you can do to achieve more members.

Marketing

Marketing is obviously the most common way of getting people into your gym. You just have to know how. You should also pay attention to the marketing you are doing. Are you seeing a return on your investment? Is it actually gaining you new members, or are you just wasting your money?

Being consistent with your marketing is a great way to ensure success. You also want to make sure you’re saying the right thing and sending the right message. Adding a personal touch to any marketing you do will be more popular. Nobody likes cold advertising campaigns.

Honestly, no one particularly likes being marketed to. If you can connect on a deeper level with your marketing, you’ll be successful.

Referrals & Incentives

When someone likes something they are bound to tell people about it. If one of your members has had a good experience at your gym they might want to tell a friend. When that friend joins you’ve gained a new member without having to do anything at all.

Why not reward your existing member? Giving people incentive to spread the word about you is worth any small amount you might give as a reward. Word of mouth advertising is more powerful than all other types. It comes with a layer of trust you can’t match with campaigns or Facebook posts.

Partnerships

Partnering with other companies isn’t a guaranteed way to grow your memberships. But they can help get your name out there. They can put you in front of customers you might not have reached otherwise.

You can partner with people by agreeing to place a banner ad in their store, flyers at their front counter, or holding a weekend bash with samples. The options are endless. Get with the business you are partnering with and come up with ideas. Ideas that are beneficial to both parties are ideal in keeping the partnership healthy.

Great places to partner with include smoothie chains, supplement stores, health food stores, doctor’s offices, and rehab facilities.

Be Genuine

Being genuine is a good exercise to practice in all things. It’s especially true in advertising. If an advertisement you’re about to place in a paper or on Facebook screams stuffy and unoriginal chances are it will be viewed that way. When you give people something to relate to you can connect with them on a more personal level. This means they’ll be more likely to trust you.

When you’re genuine and people can tell you truly care about what you do they will come. If your potential customers can tell you’re only in it for the money they’ll walk. People like to see you care. When you can show others you care you’re more likely to get them as new members.

Provide Value

This may sound like a given, but some gym owners just don’t understand the value in providing their clients with value. You can go to any gym and pay a monthly fee to workout.  Finding out with your monthly fee you also get access to specialized classes, a pool, or other activities just sweetens the deal.

Do everything you can for your members to feel appreciated and that they are getting a good deal for their money. Try providing some services for free, or include them in a membership package. This doesn’t mean every service you offer comes in the package that can get pretty costly. Tier the packages accordingly. That way they are able to choose.

People love value. Add it and they’ll be more inclined to sign up for your services.

Once again, none of these tactics are a sure fire way to gain new members. You’re going to have to experiment with what works for your gym and the potential customers you are marketing to. Keep an eye on members and what they are doing.

Staying up to speed with new trends is just another way to get more people in the door. Once you have them there give them a reason to stay.

Are you thinking about opening a gym? Are you curious where to start? The truth is, there are plenty of places you can start when opening a gym, or any business.

You’ll find, though, the most important place to start is with yourself.

Here are 4 questions to ask yourself before opening a gym. Your answers to each should help you determine if you’re ready or tell you what you need to work on.

Are you willing to do whatever it takes?

Owning a gym will be a commitment. It will take a lot of your time, energy, and money. If you aren’t willing to come in early and stay late a night then it might not be for you. This doesn’t mean this will always be the case but when you first start out you can pretty much count on it.

Even when you’ve owned your gym for years you’re still responsible for the way it looks. Sure you can hire staff to keep it clean but no one will care as much as you do. No one will be as thorough as you would be. At times you might find yourself cleaning toilets, washing towels, or cleaning up after customers.

If this doesn’t sound like something you’d be interested in then you may want to think twice.

Are you ready to be a business owner?

Firstly, you need to make sure you have the funds to own and operate your business. If you don’t have the funds or a way to get the funds wait until do.

Owning a gym means you will wear many different hats. Some days you will be the CEO, others you’ll be the receptionist, and as mentioned above sometimes you’ll be a one-person cleaning crew.

As a business owner you’ll need to have a business plan. Does this business plan include a business partner or team of investors? That’s something you’ll need to figure out.

No one expects you to know everything from the start. The more research you do and the better you know what you want out of your company the more likely you are to get it.

Are you willing to take advice?

If so, you’ll learn a lot. If not, it’s going to be rough. Talk to as many past and current gym owners as you can. Learn as much as you can from seasoned pros. Figure out what they did wrong and what they did right. Learning from others mistakes is a sure way to prevent a costly failure.

Learning what works can help you gain an advantage that could have taken you years to figure out on your own.

Are you okay with the negatives?

Owning a gym won’t always be sunshine and rainbows. You’ll need to be prepared for broken equipment, moody staff members, rude customers, and pushy sales people. You’ll need to learn to keep your cool in high stress situations. You’ll have to play nice to avoid losing customers or giving yourself a bad name.

There’s also the matter of delegating tasks. While you’ll want to do everything yourself letting others do the work you hire them to do will be more difficult than you might realize.

Are you doing it for the right reason?

This is absolutely the most important question to ask yourself. Along with, do you truly care about fitness? Do you want to help others succeed? Or, are you only in it for the money?

There isn’t a lot of money when you first start out in the gym business, and there won’t be for a while. Not until you have a well known brand people trust. When you can prove you care and can be trusted that’s when you’ll bring in the big bucks.

If you’re only in the gym business for the money then you better leave now. People will see right through your corporate mindset and won’t give you the time of day.

There are a lot of people out there that want to own a gym. The honest truth is it isn’t for everyone. You have to be able to accept the bad along with the good. You have to commit to seeing your gym succeed. There’s tons of competition out there.

You’ll have to fight for your customers and give the best experience to gain new members. If you don’t give 100% then you might not make it as a gym owner.

It’s not all bad though. As long as your heart is in the right place, and you’re willing to put in the work, you’re sure to succeed.
